Turbulence on the Water Front: News & Reflections from 18 Years of Public Service
Those who have access to drinking water from Lake Michigan are fortunate indeed. Yet threats to water quality and supply abound: proposals by counties to the west and suburbs to the south to cannibalize drinking water from the city of Chicago; demands for water and power from quantum computing and data centers; forever chemicals and microplastics detected everywhere; unquenchable thirst from drought-stricken west; and agencies charged with protecting the environment are eviscerated. What do we know and what should we be doing? Debra Shore's 18 years as Metropolitan Water Reclamation District Commissioner and regional administrator for US EPA provide the backdrop.
Debra Shore served nearly 15 years as a member of the Board of Commissioners of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago and then as Regional Administrator of the US Environmental Protection Agency until January 2025. She has also served on the Board of the Great Lakes Protection Fund, the LGBTQ+ Victory institute, Congregation Sukkat Shalom, and the Illinois Women's Instituted for Leadership Training Academy. Debra was founding editor of Chicago Wilderness Magazine and loves doing habitat restoration in the Cook County forest Preserves. She earned degrees from Goucher College, Johns Hopkins University, and Columbia College (Chicago).
