What to Expect
Did you know that the 1st Filipino men to enter North America arrived in Acapulco on Spanish Galleon ships in 1565? They were forced laborers. In 1763 some of these “Manilamen” jumped ship and found their way to the Bayous of Louisiana. There are still remnants of their descendants in the Bayous.Once the Philippine Islands became a US Territory in 1898, this group of Asians were able to immigrate to the US and become naturalized citizens.Over the years many Filipinos crossed the Pacific to settle in various parts of the USA. Of over 4 million Filipinos in the US, Chicago is currently home to 145,000.May is designated as Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. Michael Viernes (Purple Sun Arts) will tell the story of his Filipino family starting with the immigration of his Grandfather Albert Viernes in the 1930s. Join Michael to hear his story, see his family photos, and taste the scrumptious food of his ancestors.Where Should I Park?
