The Halls are Alive with the Sound of Music: Dominican University's Connection with the Beloved Musical
The Sound of Music holds a special place in Dominican University’s long history.
When Rodgers and Hammerstein were penning the iconic Broadway musical in the 1950s, they entrusted Sr. Gregory Duffy, OP, theater professor at Rosary College (as Dominican was then known) with helping to shape and authenticate the scenes depicting Catholic religious life. Through detailed, written correspondence that is preserved in DU’s archives, Sr. Gregory offered advice for refining the script, from the tiniest details to the relationships between characters.
As part of Dominican’s 125th anniversary celebrations, the university will highlight this remarkable piece of history during the free, public program, The Halls are Alive with the Sound of Music: Dominican University's Connection with the Beloved Musical. This program will take place on Thursday, Nov. 5 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in Dominican’s Martin Recital Hall, located inside the Performing Arts Center at 7900 W. Division St. in River Forest.
Moderator Sr. Priscilla Wood, OP, advisor of Sinsinawa Dominican cultural heritage, will present an evening of stories and archival treasures, some of which have not been shared outside of the Dominican community.
