Hemingway Foundation Gala Event
The Ernest Hemingway Foundation of Oak Park is pleased to announce its annual Hemingway Benefit, “The Roaring 20's Gala,” on Saturday, May 19, 2018, from 7 - 10 p.m. at the Oak Park Public Library. In 1918, Ernest Hemingway volunteered for World War I, serving in the Red Cross in Italy. Wounded during the war, upon recuperating, he returned to Oak Park to begin a new chapter in his life. Ernest celebrated his twentieth birthday soon after the ending of WWI. Upon this milestone, he began his journey, as we do tonight, into the Roaring Twenties.
The Foundation considers it an honor to preserve the legacy of Oak Park’s native son through support of his birthplace home museum, which is visited by thousands of people each year.
Our benefit is a testament to our mission statement because it supports the development and mentoring of young writers through the EHFOP Scholarship essay contest. This college scholarship is awarded to an incoming senior at Oak Park River Forest High School and includes a mentorship with our Writer-In-Residence. We will introduce this year’s recipient at the gala event. We will also introduce the finalists of our third annual publication of “Hemingway Shorts”- a collection of short stories submitted by previously unpublished writers.
Our guest of honor will be Paula McLain, author of The Paris Wife, Guests will receive a signed copy of her new book, Love and Ruin. The evening will feature delicious food by TwoMayToz Catering, cocktails by Papa’s Pilar, wine, beer, ragtime jazz by Lakeside Pride Orchestra and a fabulous silent auction. Guests will also have the opportunity to put on their best Roaring 20’s look for our Hemingway photo booth.
Please note that the net event proceeds benefit the Foundation’s mission programs including our Hemingway Foundation Scholarship Fund.
