SUMMARY:Monday Enrichment - William Hatch Elementary School Steel Drum Band
DESCRIPTION:The Hatch Steel Band is made up of 3rd to 5th grade students at Hatch Elementary School in Oak Park. The Hatch Steel Band performs regularly for the community and for larger events. The band has performed live on TV\, has recorded four albums\, and has many popular videos on YouTube. In 2024\, the Hatch Steel Band was honored by "Music for All" as one of the nation's top elementary school music programs. The Hatch Steel Band plays a wide variety of repertoire\, including calypsos\, Caribbean folk songs\, pop songs\, and classical pieces.\n\n\n\nEvan Jacobson is the music teacher at Hatch Elementary School in Oak Park. In 2010\, Mr. Jacobson discovered a small set of steel pans sitting unused. Without training\, he learned how to incorporate steelpan into his music classes. Now he directs the Hatch Steel Band along with his father Paul Jacobson a retired music teacher. During the 2022-2023 school year Mr. Jacobson earned a masters degree in steelpan performance and pedagogy at NIU. Evan and his father co-authored "Pioneers of Pan: A Process-Based Approach for Steelband in the Classroom." He is passionate about displaying the versatility of this beautiful instrument.\n\n\n\nFree and open to the public. Donations are welcome!\n\nTo live stream this program\, visit our website.
