"Preservation in Person" Lecture with Doug Deuchler - "Servants in Our Village 1880-1940"
Although our community never had the vast aristocratic estates we saw on TV's "Downton Abbey," by the late Victorian Era many of the more prosperous houses, including merely middle class homes like the Wrights' and the Hemingways', had servants—often immigrant teenagers—who were an integral part of the household. Even as the large apartment buildings arrived in the 1920s, "better off" villagers were equipped with maid's quarters in the back of their flats. Servants were regarded as a status symbol. This presentation will focus on a variety of topics, including the different levels of responsibility and privileges of servants.
Doug Deuchler is a long-time educator, journalist, and film historian. He has written 6 books for Arcadia Publishing, including "Oak Park in Vintage Postcards" and "Legendary Locals of Oak Park." He teaches film history classes at several community colleges, hosts film series at Oak Park Library, leads the screenings and discussions at the Lake Theater's First Tuesday Film Club, and is a tour guide in the community, such as at the Frank Lloyd Wright Home & Studio.
